7 Years as a Better Beauty Advocate, 14 Laws Passed!

My SEVENTH Beautycounter Anniversary is here, and it’s been a BIG year for both Beautycounter as a company and in passing health-protective laws in North America (we finally get to include Canada)! Since I wrote about my 5th Anniversary, lots has changed. The work Beautycounter as a brand has been doing to advocate for everyone for 10 years, is truly coming to fruition! When I left corporate America 4 years ago, I couldn’t have imagined where this business would take me. I’m so grateful for this mission-driven purpose!

Better Beauty Advocate Recap

In April 2022, I was able to go to D.C. again to lobby for safer skin and nontoxic beauty. We held over 60 meetings with legislative representatives. While we were celebrating 10 state laws passed over 9 years, there was still work to do. Just eight months later, we celebrated our biggest win to date.

11TH LAW (DECEMBER 2022)

The Modernization of Cosmetics Regulation Act (MOCRA) incorporates significant provisions to strengthen the FDA’s ability to regulate cosmetic and personal-care products. These reforms mark the first meaningful change in cosmetics regulation since the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act passed into law by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1938. I did a deep dive into what this means for you, and chatted with Lindsay Dahl to break it all down.

There was so much to celebrate in 2022, but the work continued on.

12TH LAW (MAY 2023)

The Toxic Free Cosmetics Act, bans more chemicals of concern in beauty and personal care products than any other state or federal law. This includes: per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS forever chemicals), lead, phthalates, triclosan, mercury, formaldehyde-releasing agents among the chemicals of concern banned more than any other state or federal law. I wrote how this law helps us all.

What’s New?

We have finally reached the tipping point! After 10 years of advocacy, seven of which I have been a part of, we are starting to see many more consumers and constituents drive regulatory change. While this is no where near the standard I want for my children’s children long-term, they are huge steps in the right direction!

13TH LAW (JUNE 2023)

The Strengthening Environmental Protection for a Healthier Canada Act was the first personal care update to CEPA for over 20 years! While our northern friends are ahead of America in terms of health protective laws, they are woefully behind Europe and the standards we need for people and planet long term. Seeing progress feels like a huge step in the right direction! [read more here]

14TH LAW (AUGUST 2023)

The most recently law was just enacted last week! The Toxic Free Cosmetics Act has become law in Oregon, too!  [read more here]

With so many regulations taking place across North America, our products will be safer for all in a few short years. It will take time for suppliers, manufacturers, and brands to meet these standards – and the laws allow for that. It will also take money – especially at the Federal level for the FDA to enact changes made in MOCRA. Which means resistance and push-back are already happening as many try to find loopholes. We as consumers need to keep telling our representatives that this is the change we want to see.
