Hi Friends, here’s a look at our week!
File this one under: from the mouths of babes! We all had a blast last weekend at the Costco book singing in Pittsburgh. We watched movies together and spent hours splashing in the pool, just giggling and having a great time enjoying each other when Finn declared that, “the power of positive thinking is the greatest super power of all!” This kid, he melts our hearts.
We’ve been on many trips since going Paleo over 5 years ago, and we now pack snacks like a BOSS! We don’t have a choice- with three hungry boys, you better have two boxes full of food in the back seat at all times. We like nuts and nut clusters from Costco, and Steve’s dried fruit and berky (yes, it’s what you think it is: beef jerky with berries… it’s the best). Plus Epic bars and fresh fruit. For even more details on what we pack for on-the-go, check out our recent —> How We Survived 30 Hours in a Car with No Junk Food and No Electronics.
So… while we strongly encourage our kids to be empowered in the kitchen, accidents do happen. And when someone microwaves a pre-cooked sausage for 15 minutes instead of 30 seconds, a kitchen fire will erupt, melt your microwave, and cause the parts to come crashing down inside. This is why we have rules and why the boys are only allowed to microwave with adult supervision. Fortunately, everyone was fine and the fire was contained to the microwave, but it definitely gives new meaning to the idea of cavemen and fire!
Speaking of being kept on our toes and never-ending entertainment, spend some time with our three boys under 10 years old, seriously. When this box of Epic Bars arrived with tattoos and sunglasses in it they were beyond ecstatic, jumping up and down and fist-pumping, quickly followed by ‘cool boy habits’ while wearing their new shades. The excitement was totally justified, as these are the coolest of cool tattoos, and the brand new Epic Bar flavors are AWESOME!
Stacy was tagged on Instagram to share five things you probably didn’t know about her. Ever wonder about her super-wonky right index finger or flexibility? You’ll want to check out this Instagram post for the whole story!
Something else you might not know about Stacy? She loves to accessorize. Even her salad is fair game! Orange and green for the win with shoes, carrots, pistachios and salad greens in the ongoing saga of daily #saladwithstacy!
Congrats to Our Friends
Michelle and Henry, of the super-popular Nom Nom Paleo, launched their own podcast last week! They are both hilarious, super-smart foodies, and are a blast to listen to. Plus their kiddos even chime in. Add this one to your playlist!

Speaking of NNP’s UMAMI podcast – We luurve flavor! Food should be exciting and fun, and worthwhile, right? Here’s how we spice things up and add LOTS OF FLAVOR to all of our meals.
We wrote all about spices and making your own spice blends for different types of meats in this —> EPIC Spice Blending Post. This post will make you a master at seasoning your dishes!
I love me some Kelp Salt– especially on my lunchtime salads. It is sea salt mixed with kelp (a type of seaweed) and it is full of flavor and tons of vitamins and minerals.
Coconut aminos are a great substitute for the soy and teriyaki sauces you used to have. We use this in almost all the Asian cooking we do, as well as some beef jerky recipes, like our Ginger-Tamari Beef Jerky.
Fish Sauce is an incredible asset to your cooking as well! And although it is predominately used in Asian dishes, it is good in just about anything! We love Red Boat brand for it’s pure, clean ingredients. Add just a touch to just about anything – like soups, cooked veggies, marinades, or eggs for elevated (not-fishy) flavor.
Kids love sauces – I think that’s pretty universal. It has taken us years to nail down some great brands with clean ingredients that we feel good about eating and giving to the boys. For the King of Sauces, Ketchup, we love Sir Kensington’s brand. They also make a killer mayo, for when we just don’t feel like making it from scratch. Mayo opens up your world to so many other goodies, like ranch dressing, coleslaw, orEastern Market’s Shrimp Salad.
We make a lot of our own dressings (like this recent Asian Vinaigrette we posted about) but we also adore Tessemae’s Honey Mustard for dipping’ chicken or tossing into a salad. And Steve’s Paleo Goods also has a number of sauces and dips that we can’t get enough of – find more on our favorites here.
