I’m fired up for what’s to come after spending a long weekend in Charlotte, NC at Beautycounter’s annual LEAD conference! I got to spend 3 very busy days learning from industry leaders with my teammates and colleagues from all over the country. I even had the privilege of speaking – what an honor to feel so validated in my words having worth! Plus, I got to see a preview of what’s to come, so I can best serve you. Afterall, that is why I’m able to do what I do YOU! I’m so excited to serve you even better with what’s ahead.
Feeling Valued and Seen
If you’ve never been in a room where you are the only person who looks like you, if you’ve never been fat, if you’ve never felt like you had to prove your worth and value rather than simply accepted as you are, if you’ve never felt like you were on an endless uphill emotional climb, I cannot describe the feelings.
But know that a health-centric beauty brand acknowledging one of its leaders is a fat woman and not shying away or hiding that means a whole lot. I am honored to get to speak and be part of this brand and mission I believe in so deeply. The CEO insisted I get into a bathtub with her. I resisted, “we won’t fit.” And not only did we, but it was a JOY.
Safer Products for Everyone
Our mission is to get safer products into the hands of EVERYONE through legislative change. And while absolutely some direct sales brands are harmful, I am proud to partner with a brand that’s paving a new way – one without any of the shady stuff.
As someone college educated in Cultural Criticism and Women’s Studies, I know what I’m talking about. We have all the women-owned small business support and community empowerment I ever could have dreamed of with Impact Scholarships to more fully embrace a diverse community. I never, ever imagined this is where I’d be. But I am honored to be a part of the herstory we are making.
I’m So Proud
This month is my 7th anniversary – I (regretfully) said no (repeatedly) to becoming a Brand Advocate for over a year. I didn’t want to partner with one of “those” brands. As a feminist, I believe most MLMs can be predatory and problematic. But the more I learned, the more I see it can be done differently. Like all businesses, it’s how you chose to execute. Walmart and Patagonia both sell tents, but do it very differently.
We are powered by people and use commerce as an engine for change. It is a powerful way to have a huge impact (we just helped pass our 14th law). As a B Corp that is also Leaping Bunny certified, with the most EWG verified items of any personal care brand, with commitment to sustainability and humane fair trade sourcing, not to mention unparalleled safety standards and testing – Beautycounter is truly putting people and planet first. Lindsay Dahl talked about how far we have come and what we still need to do, calling out about over-exposed communities near manufacturing.
Recognition for a Recovering Perfectionist
To be honest, this year has been challenging for a number of reasons, including business. And how much harder business is when I’m focusing on family. I’m grateful to work with a brand that has a greater purpose that I deeply connect to and care about. Getting to recognize and celebrate being “the top” 2, 3, and 6 in various corporate categories is so meaningful. And a good reminder to me that I don’t need to be “perfect” (spoiler alert: no such thing exists).
This is my 6th year being celebrated in the Top of the company. All because YOU trust me. YOU choose to use your wallet as a mechanism for change. You choose to counter toxic beauty standards – with ingredients and societal expectations of beauty. And in return, I get to serve and celebrate you switching to safer and practicing your own self care. And if you haven’t yet, I’d love to help!
