What We REALLY Eat: A look at our un-glamorous food!

Hi Friends- here’s a look at our week!

Boys baking, Paleo Parents: What We REALLY Eat: A look at our un-glamorous food!

Overripe bananas can only mean one thing: BANANA BREAD! Wesley worked on his knife skills prepping some nanners for the freezer while Finn and Stacy baked banana bread with the rest. Incredible recipe courtesy of Without Grain (brand new book alert!).

Family game night, Paleo Parents: What We REALLY Eat: A look at our un-glamorous food!

A slice of banana bread was the perfect accompaniment to a fun new game we’ve been playing: Three Cheers for Master. We are a game-loving family (especially since we’ve ditched most electronics… more on that HERE). It’s the perfect way to unwind, use our minds in a different way, and SPEND TIME TOGETHER.

Simple paleo lunch, Paleo Parents: What We REALLY Eat: A look at our un-glamorous food!

As un-glamorous as it may be, THIS IS HOW WE REALLY EAT most of the time. We certainly partake in Paleo baked goods on occasion, but we’ll also be the first to tell you that Paleo doesn’t have to be expensive or time-consuming!

Paleo apple snack, Paleo Parents: What We REALLY Eat: A look at our un-glamorous food!

Case-in-point: hardboiled eggs with sea vegetable sea salt and a mug of homemade broth for breakfast. Greens, carrot ribbons and sunflower seeds with canned salmonmixed with mayo and dried dill for lunch. And fresh Honeycrisp apple slices with Crunchy Sunbutter for a mid-day snack. Boring? No. Quick to prepare and full of flavor and nutrients? Yes! It doesn’t have to be complicated to be delicious!

Even though we’re food writers and recipe creators, we love to keep things quick and easy most of the time. In fact, it’s necessary! If you follow my Instagram account, you’ll see that my lunches are easy to make and our dinners at home are simple and straightforward. And here’s where we get some help:

This is How We Really Eat!

Canned tuna and salmon are staples at our house. Seafood is one of the main ways I get my anti-inflammatory omega-3s, plus it’s quick, affordable and tastes great. Win-win-win-win! Mixed with a little Sir Kensington’s Mayo and some dried herbs (usually dill) and put on top of greens and whatever other veggies are in the fridge, this combination is nutrient-dense, filling and a flavorful lunch.

Quick and easy Paleo snacks, Paleo Parents: What We REALLY Eat: A look at our un-glamorous food!

The Safe Catch brand of tuna tests every single batch for mercury levels, providing peace of mind with every can consumed. And Wild Planet Salmon in these smaller cans in the perfect serving size for my lunch, plus it’s wild and sustainably caught.

We’ve always have Inka Plantain Chips in the house – they are perfect for lunches and also go great with chili, tacos, burgers, and hot dogs. Best of all, they require no preparation! Plus, they are prefect for dipping things like Wholly Guacamole! This pre-made guac is our favorite and also helps cut down meal prep time. Use it on salads, on burgers, or even alongside chicken breasts!

Deli meat and veggies are great, but they’re even better when you can wrap them up all together. Pure Wraps (we get ’em at OSPS) are made from coconut and do a good job of containing all our sandwich fixings!

If you are craving something sweet but don’t have the time to bake something, try a Larabar. There is just about every flavor you can imagine, and the ingredients are only dried fruit, dates and nuts. Even a 1/2 or 1/3 of a bar is enough to satisfy, and we almost always find them for less than $1 each!

Congrats to Our Friends!

Need more inspiration for meal time? We looove sharing new Paleo books with you, and are continually amazed at all the new recipes and flavor combinations others are coming up with!

Best new paleo books, Paleo Parents: What We REALLY Eat: A look at our un-glamorous food!

Without Grain by Health Starts in the Kitchen has been our go-to book lately. We’ve made the Banana Bread and Vanilla Granola (actually Finn made that one all by himself!) and we have loved both. At around $15 right now, you can’t go wrong with this one! [note: this book is grain-free, not specifically paleo – so there are some recipes that include dairy or may need tweaking for your version of paleo]

And we can’t wait to see this one! All-American Paleo Table by Colorful Eats will be released in a couple weeks and looks phenomenal! We love that Caroline’s recipes are always full of flavor, grain-free, and mindful of sugars (yes, even the healthy ones).
