Key Takeaways

Introductions

  • Kurtis Lee Thomas is a Corporate Mindfulness Trainer who has introduced mindfulness practices to Ivy league colleges, top Fortune 500 companies, and even NASA.
  • He is also the chair of the Just Breathe Foundation, collaborating with top brands and celebrities to tackle today’s mental health challenges affecting communities and workplaces.
  •  He teaches the Breathwork Detox, which blends ancient wisdom with modern science.

Conscious Breathing

The most underrated breathing technique is the sigh. Because it’s the body’s natural way to release the tension in the body. It builds up and then the body goes “ahhh”, and that is the pressure release valve. You can consciously do that technique, and it will literally change your entire state. – Kurtis Lee Thomas

  • Kurtis’ own illness and health journey led him to breathwork: “I’ve been around the block, I’ve tried a lot of things, and the fact that the breath was literally right under my nose the entire time, and that’s what did it for me. I had to open my eyes up because in health school they didn’t teach us how to clear emotions, they didn’t teach us how to let go of trauma”.
  • Kurtis has worked with a lot of very different organizations. He says when you want to talk to the masses, you have to meet people where they’re at. So, working with a science-minded organizations like NASA with more “left-brained” indviduals,  he brought in a psychotherapist and a neuroscientist to complement his work.
  • He also believes that while some people will say that the components of his breathwork detox modality is an alternative modality, he would argue that this modality is actually an original one.
  • There can be some surprising health benefits with breathwork, often secondary to the reason people pursue it. Stress and anxiety can impact the body greatly.
  • Breathwork is for everyone, children included.
