Today, like most Americans, we are celebrating Independence Day. It’s a day to appreciate our freedom, our rights to think for and make choices for ourselves. I personally am thankful for the fact that I live in a country where people have fought for the rights of all humans and that we live in a safe place where our most pressing concerns are the oft referred to “first world problems” like genetically modified food and the price of eggs (p.s. if you heard our recent podcast discussing the topic, the answer to why prices are raising is Bird Flu)!
As we usually do, we are hosting a paleo potluck with lots of our friends and local bloggers today. And to our absolute awesome surprise, our buddy Russ from The Domestic Man make the trek up from Florida to come to visit us for July 4th! That meant we had to step-up our game and are SMOKING both an entire pork shoulder and beef brisket from The Organic Butcher of McLean! If you want to learn more about Smoking, we have an entire chapter on it in Beyond Bacon (showing you how to make your own smoker) as well as in this post —-> HERE.
We’ll recap all about the delicious food and awesome company we are having over next week’s – but we kicked it off last night with a lifting session with Russ, Heather from Virginia is for Hunter Gatherers, and Viv (newly gold belted United States Strongman Heavy Weight Champion). I recently started working with Maya Camille Winters as my coach for strongman to prepare for contests I plan to compete in August and November – which means I’m back to being super serious about lifting, eating, and sleeping to optimize performance. Of course, there’s also the biggest factor when it comes to performing in the gym… my head. When I get out of my own head and just believe in myself – I succeed, especially when pressing heavy. See the full video of Stacy lifting (and struggling with) this beast!
We’ve empowered our boys to believe in themselves too, and one of the ways they gain confidence is by working in the kitchen (with supervision, of course!). Finian’s favorite breakfast is fried eggs, and he’s making his own cooked in Tin Star Ghee (we get ours at One Stop Paleo Shop!). Yeah, he’s 7 going on 34.
Of course, after Finn and I train on Sundays we love to go out to eat after. Recently we’ve found and really like Social Burger, in Vienna, VA. Those little nuggets of gold are the sweet potato tots along with the steak and cheese on lettuce for Stacy, and a burger with a fried egg and fries for Stacy’s mini-me. Post WOD eats with the boys are the best.
Even when not training, fuel is essential to staying nourished and healthy! Here’s an example of a day’s eats: Matt’s incredible “less” lasagna for breakfast with a mega salad full of greens, carrot ribbons, pecans, Steve’s dried strawberries, and leftover shredded chicken. Matt’s salad game is definitely on-point as of late!

We are slashing the prices on our e-books, and I mean really slashing the prices!! Our wildly popular ebooks 3 Phase Paleo and Paleo to Go have NEVER been discounted this low. They have helped countless individuals and families change their habits, health and happiness, and we know that these books can help oh-so-many-more people!
We have three young boys, we get it. They eat a lot and they can be picky – which makes it a challenge to fill them with nutrient-dense foods. And that is precisely why we wrote 3 Phase Paleo and Paleo to Go. We went from grossly overweight and unhealthy to energetic and athletic; and we put OUR BEST TIPS, TRICKS and RESOURCES for how we did it in these books! THIS IS HOW WE DO IT. In real life. Everyday.
And we’ve discounted them for a few days ONLY, in the hopes that it can help someone else find health for their family. —> 50% off our ebooks here!
The kind of “real life” tips you’ll find in our eBooks are ideas for making things quick and easy. For example, summer vacation brings even more demand for healthy quick lunches, and fueling snacks for playing all day, fun summer trips and outings to the park and pool. Check out:
Our FAVORITE Summer Eats for Kids!
Sea Snacks: it’s seaweed, so you know it is absolutely loaded with incredible nutrients. The way it’s roasted and salted makes it good-tasting, and the thin cracker-like pieces are fun to eat and perfect for little hands.
Nikki’s Coconut Butter: are the kids begging for a snack? Give them a spoonful of Nikki’s. Problem solved.
Go-Go Squeezers: apple sauce in a pouch, and one of the boys’ favorite treats. We especially love these for travel, because they won’t get beat up and bruised in transport like an apple would. We find them most affordable on Amazon or at Costco.
Inka Plantain Chips: plantain chips are the perfect vehicle for nutrient-dense guacamole, or for scooping the meat right out of the avocado! We like them plain out of the bag too… with burgers, salads, cold chicken, you name it!
