Black Businesses We Love!

While we use and shop these Black owned businesses year-round, we want to kick off Black History Month sharing some of favorites. It has become clear how important it is to support and bring to the forefront these amazing small disadvantaged businesses. That’s what the Federal government classifies and categories businesses who are owned 51% or more by Black business owners. I was actually the Small Business Liaison Officer of my prior corporate company. So, it’s high time I step up and do the same here – seek out and share!

We make a conscious effort to support these businesses throughout the year, to ensure it isn’t a trend for the month. Here’s some ideas if you want to do the same:

  1. Bookmark and add them to your go to’s for the service or goods they provide. Give them a chance to win you over!
  2. Get the word out! Tell your friends, family, co-workers, your following, your grocery store clerk. Share with whoever will listen.
  3. Follow, like, and subscribe! Head over to your social media channel of choice and let them show you who they are.  Not a social media fan? They’ve got you! Sign up for their email newsletter.
  4. Write positive and constructive reviews!  This not only helps them to get new customers, clients and followers but can help with their rankings in internet searches.

Retail Businesses

Oui the People

This is the single-blade safety razor that has changed the game for my underarm irritation (or rather, lack thereof). When I read that Queen Bey recommended them herself, I knew it was worth a try!

The DC Pop-Up

An adorable tent vendor I discovered at DC’s outdoor market this holiday season. This adorable collective of minority-owned and women-owned DMV (DC metro area) based makers. I grabbed up-cycled gifts there and hope they find a permanent home!

The Honey Pot Company

Bea Dixon took matters into her own hands when she was suffering for months. She turned to her ancestors and created an entire plant based feminine care line that anyone will love.

The Tiny Tassel

The Tiny Tassel is a jewelry and accessories brand inspired by the vibrant colors of Charleston, SC. These are some of the only earrings that I can wear and tolerate!

Dope Coffee

Love how these gentlemen are taking coffee talk to a whole new level. Not to mention a whole line of body and skin stuff!

Modestine Teas

Lifestyle tea company on a mission to provide you with self love, community and inspiration. Laura’s story is amazing I suggest you take a read.

Opulence MD Beauty

I’ve been researching and trying out fake lashes because kiddo requested them. But the dollar store brand they used to use includes harsh chemicals that are dangerous near the eye. So I read dozens of reviews on various brands. Tried a few magnet-to-magnet types that were too difficult to use. Then I found Opulence MD Beauty! And they are AMAZING! These lashes use a magnetic liner developed for safety by an eye doc. It’s also a black-owned business that gives back. Check out my highlight reel here and tutorial here.

Agape Gems

Handcrafted jewelry that brings individuality, expression and beauty to everyone who wears it! I mean the mission says it all, “Our collections combine divine gemstones and precious metals to create jewelry that serves as a wearable reminder of the infinite love and unbreakable spirit of women.”

Lucky + Lovely

Melanie’s shop not only brings light and love to my feed, but she and her amazing staff help me to reward my Beautycounter team for their efforts.

Squat for Change

While we’ve been out of the diaper stage for a long time, (hallelujah!) this was an issue for Matt as a SAHD for years. I love that these dads came together to make a difference. Helping to raise awareness that men’s restrooms need changing tables too. Donte even has written a children’s book that’s now out!

Inner Field Trip

Leesa Renee Hall is making waves friends. Her Inner Field Trip workshops are helping people “#stumblebravely® in their quest to protect their energy, stand on the side of justice, and become better ancestors.”
