Weekend Wrap-Up, 6/7

Every Saturday we bring you a blog rendition of some of our favorite things going on this week in our own world and in the paleo world at large in a Weekend Wrap-Up. Every week we will feature our favorite paleo recipes from our archives and from other paleo bloggers that are  on our minds lately, as well as a few coupons for products we personally love, and some suggested reading for things we found interesting this week. Let’s do this thing!

Our Favorite Paleo Parents Archive Recipe of the Week:

Salted Nut & Caramel Ice Cream

What can I say? We just have creamy, cool, frosty desserts on the brain lately. I blame it on the stress of madly finishing Real Life Paleo…. But I actually don’t feel that bad when we make our own popsicles (see below) or even better, dairy-free ice cream like our Dairy Free Salted Nut and Caramel Ice Cream. It is a BIG hit every time we make it – we really can’t keep a batch in the house for long! I dare you to!

Most of the time, we don’t really do “protein bars” – they are usually filled with too much processed junk. EPIC Bars are a totally different story. They are completly paleo friendly, and they are basically jerky bars, mixed with complementary flavors (like real flavors, not artificial), and chock full of protein that is easily digested by your body. The best part? They use only meat from animals that are grass fed and pasture raised. Our favorite flavor is the Bison Bacon Cranberry bar, and it is one of the best sources of emergency protein on the market. You can take them on planes, road trips, camping trips, or just do like we do and keep a box in your car for emergency protein right after a great workout! Get 15% Off your order with coupon code “EPICDAD15” through 6/15/2014. (affiliate)

“Eat Less, Exercise More” Isn’t The Answer For Weight Loss on TIME.com

First it was the Wall Street Journal, and now its TIME.com. Yes people, our paleo principles are going mainstream and we couldn’t be more thrilled. This article is well worth the read because it talks about the principal that us “paleo peeps” have been shouting from the rooftops for a while now: just counting calories will get us nowhere in the long run. They may not call it paleo, primal, or gluten free, but this article does highlight that the biggest issue facing our overweight nation is the high consumption of sugar and processed grains. We love that they point out that eating “100 Calorie Packs” of junk food is a pointless endeavor, and that by just simply limiting calories, we are focusing on the wrong issues. We aren’t arguing the fact that if you consume less calories than you use in a day you will lose weight – that’s just a fact, but long term, permanent weight loss, and more importantly BETTER HEALTH can only be achieved by improving the quality of our food, and not only reducing the quantity.

Norpro Ice Pop Maker – BPA Free!

popsicle molds

Let’s face it people – summer is here! Kids are out of school, and darn-it if they aren’t always asking us for something to eat! One of our biggest suggestions to people is to make sure your kids get plenty of healthy fats. The healthy fats keep them satiated (full) for longer, and give them the energy they need for all of their summer activities! In the summer time, we turn some of our favorite smoothie recipes made with coconut milk into popsicles to hand out to the kids when they say they are hungry. Our kids favorite is Mango Strawberry with Coconut Milk. We use the same recipe as our smoothie, and just pour it into the molds to freeze. We like these molds because they are BPA Free and they make 10 at a time! For a bonus you can even add some grass fed Gelatin to the mix (the green kind) to bump up the nutritional content and add a small amount of protein.
