Airbnb! Or VRBO! You don’t have to have other people with you for it to make financial sense to rent an apartment or house rather than a hotel room. Choose the “entire place” option so that you have your own space (and full-sized fridge, stove, pots and pans, etc.) My husband and I were planning a month-long trip around Northern Europe. We knew hotel rooms weren’t in our budget so we started by looking at hostels. Well in Scandanavia, even the hostels (w/ the option to both be in the same room but share a bathroom with the other guests) were $150/night plus! So we turned to AirBnB and ended up booking 8 different apartments, each with their own kitchen, washer, free wifi, etc. Such a great way to travel, and especially good when traveling with dietary restrictions.

Thanks for all the tips! Perfect time of year to be talking about this. We’re going camping next weekend and then to Mexico in August, so I will definitely refer back to this post/podcast. The key is definitely to plan ahead and be prepared. Renting places with kitchens is always a good ideas for families, special dietary concerns or not.
