Since we began Paleo Parents, we’ve been increasingly and routinely asked to review books and products by people in and adjacent to the paleo community. At this point, we get so many we are unable to actually do the reviews of the products in a timely manner! That’s why we recruited the Paleo Parents Review Team to fill in the gaps.
Today we are pleased to have Monica review a Big Berkey, or more specifically a Berkey Water Filtration System. While it is common to assess nutrient intake from the foods we eat, it is important to also look at our beverage choices to identify if and how they are supporting our overall health. Big Berkeys are known for what they keep in the water, what they remove from the water, and how little these filtration systems impact the environment.
Growing up my Mom was always a little nutty about our water quality. It seemed excessive to me that every week my parents would drive to a water filtration store just to restock our bottled water supply.
Fast forward some years later and now it is my husband who is on water patrol for the family. First their was the Brita system that ate up valuable real-estate in my fridge, and then there was the water cooler that cost a ridiculous amount of money to refill. We were trying to reduce our waste by using these bulk water systems, when in all reality we were adding quite a bit of plastic to landfills.
I threw in the towel at that point and started drinking tap water.
However, one night as I poked fun at my husband for going to great lengths to drink filtered water, he asked why I take a probiotic, drink bone broth and kombucha, focus on stress management and eat organ meat. Gut health, duh. He then asked if I think I can maintain healthy gut flora if frequently consuming chlorine, fluoride, and arsenic.
Oh. I guess he had me there.
I didn’t want to return to the previous two water filtration systems that we used, so I did an extensive bit of research to find a new system. I was looking for something that would clean the gross stuff out of water, leave vital minerals in the water, and reduce the amount of waste we were producing in the process.
One name kept coming up over and over again through my research – Big Berkey.
And now as a proud Big Berkey owner I completely understand why!
When the package arrived and I opened everything up, I was impressed by the simplicity of the supplies. The entire system was lightweight and no-fuss, we had ours set-up on our counter within minutes. The container is made of stainless steel and doesn’t require electricity, making it completely portable no matter where life may take you.
After we filled our Berkey and waited for the water to filter through, we took a sampling and there was no flavor to the water whatsoever. With our two other systems there was always a weird flavor, especially with the Brita when we replaced the filter.
So why is this bad boy superior? Through reverse osmosis, Berkey Water Filtration Systems remove toxins, bacteria and chemicals, all while leaving in the minerals. The filters are so effective that they remove herbicides, pesticides, nitrates, nitrites, food coloring, lead mercury – ok, I am pretty sure the list is endless and that it can remove every harmful item commonly found in the water we drink.
To top off the awesome, the filters will last through 6,000 gallons of water. I could practically hear the landfills cheering in the distance as we fell head over heels in love with our Berkey!
On the Big Berkey Water Filters site you will find information on the seven different systems they offer and how to tell which size is best for you and your family.
We have the ‘Royal Berkey’ and are finding that it works perfectly for our family size and my need for crazy amounts of water.
Obviously you are probably thinking that you want a Berkey in your life, right?
Well now is your chance to win one!
