A look at our week – including Finn’s kitchen disaster, and how we stay healthy during cold and flu season!
Wrestling has been incredible for our oldest son Cole, and we only wish we would have found it sooner as a tool to help manage his ADHD. It has done WONDERFUL THINGS for this energy, self control, and self-confidence. He’s picky about eating before and during matches because he doesn’t want a heavy stomach; the only thing that Cole likes to eat before and during wrestling meets are Rx Bars. And with the newly released Mint Chocolate Chip flavor he genuinely feels like they were made just for him – because it tastes like a Thin Mint! These bars have dates for energy, nuts for healthy fats, and egg whites for protein… and they’re easy on the digestive system. We think they’re the perfect fuel for any athlete!
Speaking of good life choices… did you hear that sitting is the new smoking?! My treadmill desk at work continues to be great for my health. It helps me achieve my activity goals and keeps me OFF OF MY BUM while at the office. I leave work with more energy, a clear mind, and no stiffness.
You can hear all about how I make this work in a traditional office environment, the personal health benefits I’ve seen, and some adaptations for those that cannot jump in just yet on Mark Sisson’s Primal Blueprint podcast no. 98 —->> HERE.
p.s. this is the model I use —> HERE.
Alright, how about some legit “real life paleo”? This is the reality of getting your kids involved in the kitchen, not everything can always turn up roses.
THE GOOD: During family movie night, Finn wanted to make Simple Mills Chocolate Chip Cookies, which he has done many times before and only asks for adult help with taking them out of the oven.
THE BAD: Upon removal, it was revealed that he got “cookie tray” and “cookie rack” confused (we had recently used the rack to make bacon wrapped dates).
THE BEST: His hilarious attitude – he requested we post this goofy “shame” picture, and he went around the living room with a plate full of crumbs insisting everyone try them because they were “still so good!” We were just thankful he used a cookie sheet underneath the cookie rack!
A couple days later, when I wasn’t feeling well he wanted to make Simple Mills Banana Muffins in order recover some cooking confidence from the incident the night before and offer me some comfort food. These mixes are all so good, and we love that they are simple enough that the boys can make them. They never last long in the house but are so great to have on hand!

How We Fight Cold and Flu Season
Fermented Kale Powder is a newer product I’ve been using and loving. The green veggie taste disappears into a smoothie, and I get an extra dose of vitamins and probiotics. The only thing better for your health than dark leafy greens, is fermented dark leafy greens!
Sea vegetables are a great way to get extra nutrients, and sprinkling Sea Veg Sea Salt on my meal is an easy and delicious way to get them – especially during cold and flu season!
It’s probably no secret that I love (with all my heart) Vital Proteins Collagen. It’s something I use everyday to keep my body working the best that it can. Whenever someone in the house has been exposed to illness, it’s extra collagen for everyone! We simply add it to any warm beverage or to smoothies or make homemade gummies (or, in my case, triple down with all 3) for an easy way to help protect ourselves.
Organ meats are the pinnacle of nutrient-rich foods, and Epic Liver Bites are a great way to get them in without having to get past the liver taste (these bites taste awesome!), or deal with hiding liver in other foods. Keep a few bags on hand this winter!
Lard is one of the most under-rated super foods, and lard from pastured pigs (we get it at OSPS) is a great source of Vitamin D (we wrote all about Lard here!). It’s great for baking and cooking- and we’ve got plenty of recipes (and even more in Beyond Bacon) if you need more inspiration on how to use this vitamin-rich fat in your daily life.
Broth is king when illness hits! If you don’t have the time or energy to make it yourself, you can have pre-made, quality broth delivered right to your door. Bare Bones Broth is not only great tasting, but it is made from clean, high-quality ingredients. Now this is convenience Paleo!
